Introduction (مقدمة البحث)

English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Millions of people speak it as their first language, and many more learn it as a second or foreign language. It is used in education, science, business, technology and travel. But English was not always like this. It has changed greatly over about fifteen hundred years. In this research, we will follow the history of the English language from its beginning until today.‎

The history of the English language is the study of how English began, developed and spread. English belongs to the Germanic branch of the Indo-European family of languages, so it is related to German, Dutch and the Scandinavian languages. Historians usually divide its history into three main periods: Old English, Middle English and Modern English.‎

Studying the history of English helps us understand why its spelling is difficult, why it has so many words from other languages, and why some words have similar forms in different languages. It also shows us how languages live, change and borrow from each other.‎

تساعدنا دراسة تاريخ الإنجليزية على فهم سبب صعوبة تهجئتها، وسبب وجود كلمات كثيرة فيها من لغات أخرى، وسبب تشابه بعض الكلمات بين اللغات. كما تبين لنا كيف تحيا اللغات وتتغير وتقترض من بعضها.

Objectives (أهداف البحث)

  • To know the origin of English (معرفة أصل اللغة الإنجليزية).
  • To learn the three main periods of its history (التعرف على المراحل الثلاث لتاريخها).
  • To understand the effect of other languages on English (فهم أثر اللغات الأخرى فيها).
  • To know why English became a global language (معرفة سبب تحولها إلى لغة عالمية).

Old English (الإنجليزية القديمة) 450–1100

The story of English begins in the fifth century. At that time, tribes from northern Europe, called the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes, crossed the North Sea and settled in Britain. They spoke Germanic dialects. The word "English" comes from the Angles, and the word "England" means "the land of the Angles". The people who lived in Britain before them spoke Celtic languages, and many of them moved to Wales, Cornwall and Scotland.‎

Old English looks very different from the English we know today. It had a different grammar and many words that no longer exist. A modern student cannot read it without special study. The most famous work in Old English is the poem Beowulf. Many of our most common words come from Old English, such as "house", "water", "mother", "father", "eat" and "drink". Later, Viking raids brought the Norse language, which gave English words such as "sky", "egg" and "they".‎

Middle English (الإنجليزية الوسطى) 1100–1500

William of Normandy, a French-speaking duke, defeated the English king at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and became King of England. This event, called the Norman Conquest, changed the language greatly. French became the language of the king, the court, the law and the church, while ordinary people continued to speak English. For about three hundred years, the two languages lived side by side.‎

As a result, thousands of French words entered English, especially words of government, law, art and food. For example, English farmers used the old words "cow", "pig" and "sheep" for the animals, but the French-speaking nobles used "beef", "pork" and "mutton" for the meat on the table. During this period, English grammar became simpler. The most famous writer of Middle English is Geoffrey Chaucer, who wrote The Canterbury Tales in the fourteenth century.‎

Modern English (الإنجليزية الحديثة)

Modern English is divided into Early Modern English, which lasted from about 1500 to 1700 and Late Modern English which continues until today. Several important events shaped this period. First, William Caxton brought the printing press to England in 1476 and so books became cheaper and spelling became more fixed. Second, a big change in pronunciation, called the Great Vowel Shift, changed the sound of long vowels, which is why English spelling often does not match pronunciation.‎

The age of William Shakespeare (1564 to 1616) was a golden age for the language. Shakespeare used a huge vocabulary and created many new words and expressions that we still use. The King James Bible of 1611 had a great effect on written English. Later, Samuel Johnson published a famous dictionary in 1755 and in the United States Noah Webster published his own dictionary in 1828 to help standardize spelling.‎

Why did English spread?‎ (كيف انتشرت الإنجليزية؟)

English spread around the world for several reasons. From the seventeenth century, the British Empire carried the language to North America, Africa, Asia and Australia. In the twentieth century, the United States became a leading country in industry, science, cinema and technology. Today, English is the main language of the internet, aviation, international business and scientific research, and it is an official language in dozens of countries.‎

Arabic words in English (كلمات عربية في الإنجليزية)

English has borrowed many words from Arabic, mainly through Spanish, French and Latin in the Middle Ages, when Arabic was the language of science and trade. The table shows some examples.‎

اقترضت الإنجليزية كلمات كثيرة من العربية، وغالبًا عبر الإسبانية والفرنسية واللاتينية في العصور الوسطى حين كانت العربية لغة العلم والتجارة. ويوضح الجدول بعض الأمثلة.

Conclusion (الخاتمة)

In conclusion, English has a long and interesting history. It began as the Germanic dialects of the Angles, Saxons and Jutes, was changed by the Vikings and the Normans, and grew into a modern global language through printing, literature, empire and technology. Today, learning English opens doors to knowledge and communication with people all over the world. We should learn it well while we keep our Arabic language and identity.‎
